Protecting Your Bamboo
Keeping your bamboo looking good is actually pretty simple.
Start by washing the bamboo properly so all dirt and loose particles are gone. Let it dry completely, then apply a good water-based coating with a spray or brush. Make sure it dries between coats. Two coats is the minimum, and honestly, you can’t put too many on. The more surface protection, the better.
Just remember:
Anything that sits in direct sunlight is going to fade over time. Bamboo is no different. Once the natural colour fades, it’s gone for good. That colour only lives in the very thin outer skin, and when the sun takes it, there’s no “bringing it back.”
If your bamboo has already faded, you can still make it look great again by using a water-based stain. Pick any colour you like. The process is the same: clean the bamboo, let it dry, and apply at least two coats. Most stains get darker with each coat, so you can build up the look you want.
What We Learned Over the Years
In the early days, there were no bamboo-specific coatings available in Australia. Everyone, including us, started with oil-based products because that’s all the industry knew at the time. We even developed some of the first bamboo-branded versions, which you’ll see in the photos below.
They helped us get the bamboo industry moving... but over time, it became obvious they weren’t the right fit for bamboo’s natural surface.
That experience is exactly why we stopped using oil-based coatings altogether.
And it's why we educate customers the way we do today.
(And don’t worry — we don’t sell or promote any particular water-based brand. We just explain what actually works.)
Our Early Coatings (Historical Only)
“Early oil-based bamboo coatings used in Australia. These helped start the industry, but we now know oil-based formulas are not suitable for bamboo’s natural skin.”
